What Is an Intake Officer?
An Intake Officer is the first point of contact in the Episcopal Church when someone has a concern or allegation of misconduct by a clergyperson. Anyone may bring an allegation forward—including the person directly affected, a witness, or any church member who becomes aware of the situation.
The Intake Officer’s role is not to conduct a full investigation, but to gather initial information so the Church can determine the appropriate next steps. This includes:
The name of the clergyperson involved
A clear narrative of what is alleged to have happened
The names of any witnesses
The names of anyone else who may have been harmed
Any related documents, messages, or materials
The Intake Officer then evaluates whether the information—if assumed to be true—would constitute an “Offense” under the Church’s canons (Title IV). Importantly, the Intake Officer does not judge the truth of the allegations.
Throughout the process, the Intake Officer explains how the Church responds to concerns of misconduct and ensures that the person bringing the information understands their rights and the steps the Church will take. Their work helps the Church respond with clarity, compassion, and accountability.
