  • Archdeacon for DioWis

There are two communities that the archdeacon serves, the diaconate and the churches in the diocese. The role of the diaconate is to bring God’s love to the world and the world to God’s love. They do this by bringing the needs of the world to the church and the church to the needs of the world. The archdeacon therefore represents an important part of the diocese’s outreach ministry in the communities of the diocese, the state, and the world.

Serving the diaconate, the role emphasizes support, guidance, and empowerment of the deacons’ ministry. The archdeacon is both a resource and a collaborator to support, mentor, train, advocate for, assist in discernment of calls to the ministry, and be a connection for the deacons to the bishop. Deacons work directly for the bishop, so the archdeacon’s role is important in the life in the ministry of each deacon and the community of deacons in the diocese. The archdeacon’s efforts to gather the deacon remind individual deacons and the community of deacons that they are not alone in their ministry.

For churches and members of the diocese, the role of the archdeacon represents a bridge between the parishes and the diocese. How that is experienced at the parish level is seen in many ways. Through visits and work with parishes, lay leaders, and clergy the archdeacon is an advisor and mentor. The goal is to help make the Church’s work visible in the wider community, advocating for social justice, and initiatives that reflect Christ’s love.

The archdeacon helps the Church become a more visible, prayerful, and transformative presence in the world, fulfilling its mission to be the hands and feet of Christ.
