What Is a Canon to the Ordinary?
Understanding One of the Most Mysteriously Titled Roles in the Episcopal Church
If you’ve ever read a diocesan email and thought, “Canon to the what-now?”—you’re not alone.
The Episcopal Church has a rich tradition of titles that sound like they belong to fantasy novels or the British Parliament. “Canon to the Ordinary” might be one of the more head-scratching examples. But don’t worry—we’re here to break it down in plain English.
First: What’s an “Ordinary”?
In Episcopal terms, the “Ordinary” is the bishop. It’s an old term from church law referring to someone with ordinary jurisdiction—meaning they’re the regular (not temporary) ecclesiastical authority in a diocese.
So when we say “Canon to the Ordinary,” we’re not talking about a church-based artillery unit. We’re talking about someone who works closely with the bishop, serving as a key advisor and right hand in the day-to-day ministry and operations of the diocese.
So What Does the Canon Do?
Think of the Canon to the Ordinary as a kind of chief of staff, coach, and connective tissue across the whole diocesan body. Their work often includes:
Supporting clergy and congregations during times of transition or conflict
Helping with the deployment (placement and care) of clergy
Advising on policy, governance, and strategy
Representing the bishop in meetings or at events
Assisting with ordination processes and diocesan communications
Translating Big Church Stuff™ into human language
And every diocese is a little different—some Canons also oversee finances, lead mission planning, or dive into special projects depending on their gifts and the needs of the bishop.
But Why “Canon”?
The word “Canon” originally meant a rule or standard. Over time, it became a title for clergy or laypeople who serve in specific leadership roles within the church, especially at cathedrals and diocesan offices.
In modern Episcopal use, “Canon” is both a title of honor and a signal that someone’s role is part of the church’s formal structure.
